Term Six

Our value for this term is Friendship.

Term 6 Overview of Learning

Our enquiry is: What is my village like?

This term we will be learning all about the local area of Berrow, Brean and Burnham-on-Sea.  We will be looking at maps, finding where we live, learning how to recognise human and physical geographical features and then creating our own maps.  We will be looking at how the local area has changed over time, exploring photographs from different periods of time and comparing them to photos taken from 'today'.

Maths

We will begin the term continuing to expand our addition and subtraction knowledge to include numbers within 20. We will then turn our attention to unitising and coin recognition, exploring the value of different coins and calculating different amounts of money. Building on prior knowledge, we will also be developing our time-keeping skills to improve telling the time to the half-hour.

English

This term our book is 'The Secret of Black Rock'.  We will continue to use our understanding of nouns and adjectives and learn all about verbs and how they add to a sentence.  We will be writing an innovation of the story.  We will also be writing a report about the SV Nornen, using the book ‘Sunk!’, linking to our enquiry question.  Throughout the term we will continue to focus on handwriting.

Science

This term we will continue to look at how the seasons change throughout the year.  We will also be looking at one of the mini-enquiry questions "How has the weather changed our local area?".  We will be reviewing prior learning about plants and the features of a plant and a tree.

History

This term we are continuing to look at the history of toys and how they have changed over the years. With strong links to science, we will explore how the materials of toys have changed and why certain materials are used to make toys over others.

Geography

This term we will be looking at the weather, using and interpreting weather maps and symbols. We will also be drawing our own weather maps using the symbols we have learnt.

Art

Our focus artists this term are Marc Chigall and Pierre-Auguste Renior.  We will be using St Anne's Church as our inspiration, learning how different tools create a different effect with the aim to create our own take on a stained glass window.

RE

This term we will be looking into the Christian and Hindu religions and learning about why places are special to their religions.

Music

In music, we will be looking at pitch, learning how to identify high and low notes. Our aim will be to compose a simple tune to represent a superhero.

PSHE

This term our PHSE topic is Changing Me. We will be developing our ability to recognise different changes and express how we feel when change happens. Our aim is to respect the changes we see in ourselves and in other people.

Trips and experiences

We are really lucky this term and next term to have some exciting trips and experiences booked for us to explore toys from the past and how everyday materials have changed over the years. Keep an eye out for more information about these.
